With various footballing contracts set to expire in June 2025, here is a look at five potential stand-out players available on free transfers in the summer transfer window.

As the current season approaches its conclusion, many teams will be turning their attention towards the summer transfer window which will massive spending sprees at some clubs whilst others opt to move on the deadwood whilst retaining much of their squad with little new signings.

There however will lie plenty of potential cheap free transfers amongst the big spending so here is a look at five potential stand-out players available on free transfers.

Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)

Having previously spent four years with Manchester City before he went on to spend five years with Bayern Munich, Leroy Sane is currently set to depart the Bundesliga champions this summer.

Whilst there will undoubtedly be no shortage of suitors across Europe, you have to think that Sane could return to England after his strongest season with Bayern yet which yielded 13 goals and five assists.

His wage demands though will prove a challenge but given Chelsea’s big-money spending and need for an established winger if don’t sign Jadon Sancho permanently, they surely have to be frontrunners ahead of Arsenal and Newcastle who are mooted to be interested despite having strong wingers already in their squads.

Jonathan David (Lille)

Firmly established as one of Europe’s top goalscorers after his exploits at Lille across the last five seasons during which he scored 25+ goals in the last three campaigns, it is little surprise that Jonathan David is hotly tipped for a Premier League move.

The 25 year-old is also hitting the prime of his career and with the versatility of playing as an attacking midfielder beyond his usual forward role, which are qualities which many top Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle need if they are to mount a more serious challenge for titles in coming seasons.

David though has also attracted interest from Italy whilst Lille’s French rivals, PSG will undoubtedly be lurking with an offer to boost their talented squad, so he will certainly be a player to watch out for in the early phases of the summer transfer business.

Callum Wilson (Newcastle)

Having fallen down Newcastle’s pecking order this season following back and hamstring injuries in the first half of the campaign, Callum Wilson looks likely to leave the Magpies this summer for pastures new off the back of one goal in 19 appearances across the season.

Now 33 years-old and in the twilight years of his career, Wilson is unlikely to be a regular striker but he does still have the qualities needed to deliver when needed so would be an asset for a club like Fulham or Everton, whilst he could be an ideal player for Forest who will need squad depth for Europe next season.

Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)

Out of contract and having suffered a second relegation with Southampton after five-and-a-half years at the club, Kyle Walker-Peters surely will have plenty of mid-table suitors keen to secure his services.

Given his loyal reliable commitment and versatility to play at full-back on both flanks, Walker-Peters would be a huge asset for any top-flight club especially at mid-table where he will be a solid regular – which could well suit Fulham if Kenny Tete moves on as his contract is also set to expire this summer.

Newcastle though could be a good option if Eddie Howe wishes to boost his full-back options ahead of their return to European action next season.

Victor Lindelöf (Manchester United)

Although this season has proven difficult for Lindelöf in the final year of his contract at Manchester United, the Swede is their second longest-serving player in the current squad and still is capable of delivering strong performances if given regular game time under the right manager.

Should he indeed depart Old Trafford then I would like to see him stay in the Premier League because as well as his defensive ability, his passing range is one of the more clinical from a defensive perspective which will be of benefit to a Premier League club like Fulham or Wolves.
