Brighton manager, Fabian Hürzeler believes that Mats Wieffer potentially “has the whole package to be a top, top player in the Premier League.”
Wieffer scored his first goal for the Seagulls on his 13th league appearance for the club in a 1-1 draw at West Ham last weekend, having joined from Feyenoord in July this summer.
“Nowadays you call it the holding six and I think that this is one of the most important positions in our team,” commented Hürzeler on the importance of the position and Wieffer’s potential to excel in that role to become a top player.
“He is very good in possession; he has good passing and a good understanding of the game. Out of possession he is very athletic.
“He is a fast and tall player, so he has the whole package to be a top, top player in the Premier League.”
Hürzeler also acknowledged that patience was needed in allowing Wieffer to find his feet in England’s top-flight, noting that the 25 year-old “needed a little bit of time to adapt to the intensity and to the speed of everything…”
Wieffer also conducted “a lot of individual training” according to Hürzeler whilst displaying an “intrinsic motivation inside him which is very positive.”
On Wieffer’s next step now that he has his first goal in the Premier League, Hürzeler explained that integration with his teammates is a priority.
“Now we will help him to get more integrated into the team and hopefully he stays resilient and avoids any further injury.”
