Brighton Head Coach, Fabian Hürzeler has criticised his squad for “ugly” defensive collapse in 2-2 draw at home to Wolves.

Goals from Danny Welbeck and Evan Ferguson had put Brighton on course for victory, until Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha struck late to rescue a 2-2 draw for Wolves.

The result left Brighton fifth in the table as they missed out on a chance to go third following Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.

The late defensive collapse left Hürzeler bemoaning the lack of maturity and professionalism to see out the win, especially with a midweek Carabao Cup clash at home to Liverpool to come on Wednesday 30 October.

“In the end we lost two points and we failed today in our development. We were not mature enough, not professional enough to win this game, so we have to learn quickly.”

Hürzeler proceeded to speak of the need for his players to learn to win “ugly” rather than in a “beautiful” manner, as he slammed the toothless defending of Wolves’ comeback goals.

“I think until our second goal we controlled the game. We defended quite well and then we got too passive. We were not ruthless enough in defending the set pieces. I think a lot of people thought the game was over at 2-0.”

The 31 year-old however acknowledged the youthful look of the squad but urged them to unite and deliver a response in midweek.

“I know that this team is very young with a lot of potential, but in these moments you stay together, you learn from it and show personality and character and that’s what I expect to see now.”

Brighton however could be without captain, Lewis Dunk after he missed this match with a muscle injury.

“He has a small issue with his muscle and he will have a scan and then we’ll see,” explained Hürzeler on Dunk’s absence which meant that Welbeck captained the team in his place.
