Brighton & Hove Albion have signed winger, Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United for £33m.
Minteh joined Newcastle from Denmark’s Odense Boldklub in June 2023 and spent last season on loan at Netherlands’ Feyenoord, where he scored 11 goals and created five assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
The 19 year-old also was part of Feyenoord’s squad to win KNVB Cup last season in which he made three appearances, which included a start in their victory over NEC Nijmegen in the Final.
Newcastle however were under pressure to meet Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), so opted to sell Minteh to meet the profit requirement as they accepted a £33m offer from Brighton amidst interest from Everton and Lyon.
Minteh has signed a five-year contract until June 2029 and becomes Brighton’s first signing under new manager – Fabian Hürzeler who has replaced Roberto De Zerbi at the helm.
Brighton’s Technical Director, David Weir described Minteh as “a young talent that has attracted a lot of interest, so we’re delighted to welcome him to the club.”
Weir added: “He is an exciting attacking player with incredible speed. He had a very impressive campaign with Feyenoord, gaining experience in both the Champions League and Europa League.
“Now we will give him the time and support he needs to ensure that he settles in.”
Minteh revealed that he is “really happy” to join Brighton but praised Feyenoord for their support in his development last season, plus Newcastle for bringing him to the Premier League despite not playing a single game for the Magpies.
“Feyenoord was a great experience for me. Everybody loved me, the coaching staff, players – it was like a family. But Brighton is a club which I have watched in the Premier League. It’s a good club for young players and the way the young players have progressed here is important for me.
“I think it’s a great thing to move to [another] Premier League club. Although I didn’t play any games for Newcastle look where I am now! I have the chance at Brighton in the Premier League.”
Newcastle in-turn signed goalkeeper, Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest as third-choice goalkeeper, with manager – Eddie Howe commenting: “That strength in depth is valuable and means we go into the new season with strong competition in a key area.”
Vlachodimos’ move to Tyneside coincided with Elliot Anderson heading to Forest in a £35m transfer.
Forest’s Chief Officer, Ross Wilson commented: “We are all delighted to welcome Elliot to Nottingham Forest and pleased that he has chosen to continue to develop his talent with us in the Premier League.
“We are sure he will thrive in a Forest shirt, as other players in his age profile have done.”
