2023-24 Premier League: Week 38 – Manchester City vs West Ham

Manchester City are on the brink of four consecutive league titles as they entertain West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.

Victory would see Man City seal a historic fourth straight Premier League crown but a draw or defeat would open the door for Arsenal due to City’s slightly inferior goal difference, should Mikel Arteta’s Gunners beat Everton in North London.

West Ham meanwhile will finish ninth regardless of their result here.

Ederson is ruled out for Man City with an eye socket fracture which saw him substituted in their midweek win at Tottenham.

Kevin De Bruyne (Achilles) is expected to be available for selection.

West Ham could welcome Konstantinos Mavropanos (knock) and Nayef Aguerd (shoulder) back into contention.

Kalvin Phillips is ruled out with a calf injury but otherwise would of been ineligible to face his parent club.

When is Kick-Off?

Man City host West Ham at Etihad Stadium on Sunday 19 May at 4pm BST, live on Sky Sports Main Event in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Man City are unbeaten in their last 16 league meetings against West Ham (W13, D3).
  • West Ham are winless in their last seven league visits to Man City (L7).
  • City’s Erling Haaland has scored four goals in three appearances against West Ham.
  • Erling Haaland has scored five goals in City’s last two league matches at home (W2), which ended in 5-1 wins over Luton and Wolves respectively.
  • West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen is one of two English players to have scored five headed league goals this season, alongside Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

Prediction

Knowing that only a win would secure a fourth straight league title, Man City must once again be as clinical as they’ve been lately and patient as they were in a scrappy midweek victory at Tottenham, although nerves could play a part if Arsenal go ahead first in their game.

West Ham meanwhile can’t afford to be as sloppy as they were in the first half against Luton and must instead be at their defensive best, whilst also taking their chances if want to give David Moyes a strong farewell as manager.

City though should have the edge if they are at their best but they have almost stumbled at this stage on their own turf before, yet they do say that things can happen in threes and if they’re not careful then it wouldn’t be a shock if they blow the title.

I however just don’t see that happening and this should be a routine win to seal the title.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 West Ham

Result: Manchester City 3-1 West Ham
