2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 46 – Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday

Sunderland host relegation battling Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light on the final day of the Championship season.

Victory would see Sunderland finish as high as 13th in the table if Swansea and Watford lose elsewhere.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile need at least a draw at minimum in order to stay up or if they lose, they will need Plymouth and Birmingham to fail to win their games elsewhere.

Sunderland have no fresh injury concerns to report after their defeat at Watford last weekend.

Nazriy Rusyn (calf) and Dennis Cirkin (hamstring) are unlikely to be risked, whilst Niall Huggins, Jay Matete, Jenson Seelt (all knee), Elliot Embleton and Dan Neil (both ankle) remain ruled out.

Sheffield Wednesday could welcome Michael Ihiekwe back into contention after he missed their win over West Brom with a knock.

Ian Poveda (hamstring) is a doubt but Lee Gregory (hamstring) and Juan Delgado (hip) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Sunderland host Sheffield Wednesday at Stadium of Light at 12:30pm BST on Saturday 4 May, untelevised live in the UK.

Prediction

Although safety hasn’t been under much danger despite their poor second half of the season, Sunderland have to sort out their form because one goal in their last home games – plus overall last five matches – is pretty poor for a team capable of better results.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile need just one point to survive and having picked up form recently which included a clinical home win over West Brom, I do expect them to come out fighting because this is now a very winnable game.

Sunderland though can’t afford to roll over because this is their last chance to impress any manager looking to come in this summer, yet they need to step up and show more clinical end product but the Owls will have more desire to see them through despite their poor form on Wearside.

Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday

Result: Sunderland 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday
