2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 45 Roundup

Roundup of latest Championship action in a dramatic penultimate matchweek, as promotion, survival and play-off hopes looked to be settled.

Jamie Vardy’s brace and Kasey McAteer’s close-range header saw Leicester thrash Preston 3-0 at Deepdale to secure the Championship title, having already clinched promotion in the previous matchweek.

Coventry put promotion into their own hands going into the final day after they first blew the lead on three occasions in a 3-3 draw away to Hull – during which Omari Hutchinson scored twice –  before Kieffer Moore and Cameron Burgess scored in a 2-1 win at Coventry.

Leeds were left needing luck to swing their way on the final day if want automatic promotion after they slipped to third with a 4-0 loss at QPR, in which Ilias Chair, Lucas Andersen, Lyndon Dykes and Sam Field netted for the Hoops.

Fourth-placed Southampton suffered a third consecutive defeat as they lost 1-0 at home to Stoke, as Tyrese Campbell netted a 36th minute winner for the Potters at St Mary’s Stadium.

Norwich moved up to fifth with a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea in which Gabriel Sara and Josh Sargent put them ahead from behind, after Jamie Paterson had put the Swans in front whilst Matt Grimes eventually snatched a point for the visitors with his equaliser.

West Brom round out the top six despite suffering a 3-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday, as Anthony Musaba, Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass netted for the Owls who now need one point on the final day to stay up.

Down in the relegation zone, already relegated Rotherham lost 2-0 at Bristol City through Tommy Conway’s penalty and Scott Twine’s free-kick.

Second bottom Huddersfield kept their slim survival hopes alive with a 1-1 draw at home to third bottom Birmingham City, after Koji Miyoshi had initially put the visiting Blues in front before Rhys Healey equalised for the Terriers.

Plymouth found themselves one point above the drop after suffering a late 1-0 loss at Millwall in which Jake Cooper headed in a decisive 83rd minute winner for the Lions.

Elsewhere, Finn Azaz and Alex Gilbert produced a goal and assist apiece in a 4-1 away win for Middlesbrough at Cardiff, with Matt Clarke and Emmanuel Latte Lath also on the scoresheet for the visitors whilst Josh Bowler netted an injury-time goal for the Bluebirds.

Ryan Andrews struck a 54th minute winner as Watford scraped a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland.

Finally, Blackburn held ten-men Coventry to a goalless draw during which Liam Kitching was red carded for a foul on Sam Gallagher.
