2023-24 Sky Bet Championship: Week 46 – West Brom vs Preston

West Brom look to seal a Championship play-off spot against Preston at The Hawthorns on a blockbuster final-day.

Victory or a draw would be enough for West Brom to secure their play-off spot but if they draw, they would need Hull to not win by 11 or more goals at Plymouth otherwise they would finish seventh and miss out on the play-offs.

Preston meanwhile can finish ninth if they win and Coventry lose elsewhere.

Brandon Thomas-Asante and Jed Wallace are doubts for West Brom after struggling in training this week.

Daryl Dike (Achilles) and Jayson Molumby (foot) remain absent.

Preston have no fresh injury concerns to report following their 3-0 home loss to Leicester.

Alistair McCann (thigh), Ben Whiteman (ankle) and Brad Potts (hamstring) remain sidelined.

When is Kick-Off?

West Brom host Preston at The Hawthorns on Saturday 4 May at 12:30pm BST, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • West Brom have won two of their last five meetings against Preston (W2, D1, L2).
  • Preston have won one of their last 11 league visits to West Brom (W1, L10).
  • Carlos Corberan’s Baggies have won two of their last three home matches against Preston by 2-0 result.
  • West Brom are looking to avoid suffering four consecutive defeats for the first time since May 2021.
  • Preston have failed to score in any of their last four away matches (D1, L3).

Prediction

After a poor defensive display in their loss at Sheffield Wednesday, West Brom must quickly refocus because all they need is at least a draw to secure a play-off spot, unless Hull can get a huge win at Plymouth so this is really in their own hands.

Preston meanwhile have nothing to play for but I don’t see them rolling over here because they will want to finish the campaign with a win, whilst this will be the last chance for some players to try and earn their place in the squad next season.

Corberan’s Baggies though should really win this if they can cut out their recent sloppy defending but I do fancy Preston to cause issues, which could well see them nick a draw if can end their away rut of recent weeks.

Prediction: WBA 1-1 Preston

Result: WBA 3-0 Preston
