2023-24 Premier League: Week 19 – Brentford vs Wolves

Brentford meet Wolves at Gtech Community Stadium in a mid-table Premier League encounter.

Victory can see Brentford move up to 11th if Chelsea lose elsewhere, whilst Wolves can go tenth with a win if win by three goals or more and Chelsea don’t win at home to Crystal Palace.

Ben Mee is suspended for Brentford’s next three matches after he was red carded in their defeat to Aston Villa in their last outing.

Kristoffer Ajer (foot) and Mathias Jensen (adductor) are doubts but Frank Onyeka is serving an one-match ban, having picked up his fifth booking of the season against Villa.

Rico Henry (knee), Bryan Mbeumo (ankle), Josh Dasilva, Aaron Hickey (both hamstring), Kevin Schade (adductor) and Ivan Toney (suspension) remain absent.

Wolves could welcome Pedro Neto back into contention following his recovery from a hamstring injury which has kept him sidelined for two months.

Craig Dawson and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde (both illness) could be available but Joseph Hodge (shoulder) and Jonny (personal) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Brentford host Wolves at Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday 27 December at 7:30pm GMT, live on Amazon Prime in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Brentford have won one of their four previous Premier League meetings against Wolves (W1, D1, L2).
  • Wolves have avoided defeat in their two previous Premier League visits to Brentford (W1, D1).
  • Former Wolves player, Ruben Neves scored two of their three away goals against Brentford in the Premier League.
  • No Brentford player has made more interceptions this season than Ethan Pinnock, who has achieved 32 interceptions in 17 league appearances.
  • Coming into this matchweek, no Wolves player has made more headed clearances than Max Kilman (46).

Prediction

Having had a rare weekend off before Xmas and with no Boxing Day fixture, Brentford have had a great week to focus upon their tactics for this game where their defence will need to adapt after Mee’s red card because Wolves do play with pace when get on the attack which could cause issues.

Their attack meanwhile were wasteful against Villa in open play so more composure will be ideal although this is their second-to-last game without Toney, whose return can’t come soon enough in the central forward role.

Wolves meanwhile can’t afford to be as sloppy as they were for much of their win over Chelsea because Brentford are that fresh, they should punish a slow start if Gary O’Neil’s Old Gold aren’t careful although I do expect Wolves to try and use their pace to catch the Bees on counter-attacks.

Brentford though will be aware of Wolves’ awful record in London this season with four defeats in four visits to the capital, so I do expect this to be tightly-fought battle which the Bees should edge due to having the fresher legs despite not beating Wolves in their last two clashes at home.

Prediction: Brentford 1-0 Wolves

Result: Brentford 1-4 Wolves
