Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai netted for second-placed Liverpool in a 2-0 win at rock-bottom Sheffield United, as the Blades suffered a disappointing result upon Chris Wilder’s return to the dugout after Paul Heckingbottom was sacked.
Leon Bailey struck a 74th minute winner as Aston Villa scraped past Manchester City at Villa Park to move above their visitors into third.
Fifth-placed Tottenham suffered a 2-1 home loss to West Ham in which James Ward-Prowse struck a 74th minute comeback winner for the Hammers, after Jarrod Bowen’s equaliser had cancelled out Cristian Romero’s header.
Down in the relegation zone, Burnley remain second bottom after they narrowly lost at Wolves to Hwang Hee-chan’s 42nd minute winner.
Late goals from Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto saw Everton beat Newcastle 3-0 at Goodison Park, which lifted the Toffees out of the relegation zone at Luton’s expense.
Nottingham Forest found themselves four points above the drop following a 5-0 loss at Fulham, in which Alex Iwobi and Raul Jimenez scored twice apiece before Tom Cairney wrapped up the Cottagers’ win with a 86th minute strike.
Elsewhere, Scott McTominay’s brace saw Manchester United defeat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford despite Cole Palmer having equalised for the Blues on the stroke of half-time.
Jack Hinshelwood headed in his first senior goal to grab a 52nd minute comeback winner for Brighton in a 2-1 home victory over Brentford, after Pascal Gross’ curled strike cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opening penalty.
Finally, Marcos Senesi and Kieffer Moore’s headers saw Bournemouth snatch a 2-0 win away at Crystal Palace.
