Brentford Head Coach, Keith Andrews felt that Kaye Furo would have started their Carabao Cup tie at Reading if not for an injury.
Furo’s absence came after he needed surgery on an unspecified injury suffered in training last week, having already scored four goals in the Bees’ first two matches in this season’s Premier League 2 (PL2), which earned him August’s Player of the Month gong in PL2.
“Kaye Furo has picked up an injury in the last few days in training,” explained Andrews who revealed in his pre-match press conference that the 19-year-old has undergone surgery this morning (14 September), as Andrews rued the timing given Furo’s form.
“Unfortunately for him, he’s had to have an operation this morning. The timing of an injury is obviously never good for a player, but I felt he was just coming into a really good place with his game.
“That’s really frustrating for him. I would’ve started him against Reading because I felt he deserved it and was in that type of space.
“I’m not sure how long he’s going to be out for but we’ll obviously look after him and get him back to a good place.”
Central defender, Benjamin Fredrick however is set for his senior debut with the Bees but spent last season on loan at FCV Dender, with Andrews confident that the 21-year-old will be involved in the match tomorrow night (15 September) at Select Car Leasing Stadium.
“He hasn’t had a lot of football but has come back in the last couple of weeks.
“We decided not to play him in the B team game on Sunday to make sure he was in the right place to be available for our game against Reading.
“I anticipate he’ll be involved.”
With 5,000 away fans set to travel to Reading for the third-round tie, Andrews believes that the numbers demonstrate the club’s desire to take the competition as a serious opportunity.
“We’ve got 5,000 fans going to the game and that, for me, says it all about the belief that fans have that we are taking it very seriously,” commented Andrews on how serious they’re taking the tie and competition in order to achieve better success than last season.
“It’s a priority, and not just because it’s the next game. We didn’t get to exactly where we wanted to last year, but that’s the plan this year.
“Next up is Reading. We’ll put a team out we feel is right to compete against Reading and, hopefully, get us into the next round.”
