Franco Colapinto has graduated into F2 and will drive for MP Motorsport in the 2024 season.

Colapinto stayed in F3 this season as he switched to MP Motorsport from Van Amersfoort Racing and took two wins plus three further podium finishes en-route to fourth in the driver standings.

MP consequently opted to promote him to their F2 line-up for the 2024 season, although he will replace Jehan Daruvala for the final round of this season’s campaign at Abu Dhabi from 25-27 November and participate in the post-season test a week later.

Upon confirmation of his move up to F2, the 20 year-old Williams junior commented: “I am very excited and grateful for this opportunity. We’ve been working really hard to secure a seat in F2 so this is a dream come true.”

On what it meant to stay with MP Motorsport and have continuity with Williams’ support, Colapinto continued: “To be able to do it with MP Motorsport makes it even more special. Thanks to Sander and Henk for their trust and continuing to support me.

“Being part of the Williams Racing Driver Academy, this past year has been an incredible experience.”

Colapinto also paid tribute to his home country, Argentina for their support as he quipped: “The love and support I receive from my home country every day lifts me up and pushes me through the toughest times. I couldn’t be prouder to fly the flag in F2.”

MP Motorsport’s Team Principal, Sander Dorsman meanwhile believes that replacing Daruvala with Colapinto before the season finale is a positive move, giving the team “a head-start in our preparations for an exciting 2024 F2 season in which we all start from zero, with the new F2 car offering everyone a new baseline to work from.”

With next season seeing F2 adopt a new spec-car, Dorsman believes that Colapinto will provide continuity going into the new campaign, as he added: “Retaining Franco helps us to maintain stability in that transition, apart from the fact that he’s become a member of the MP family and is an extremely quick and talented driver.”
