Arsenal have signed midfielder, Kyra Cooney-Cross from Hammarby Fotboll for £140k.
Cooney-Cross’s contract at Hammarby was set to expire in December with many top clubs set to swoop in January to sign the 21 year-old on a free transfer, which prompted Arsenal to move now to sign the 35-cap Australian international in a £140k deal.
“I’m so excited to join this club,” commented Cooney-Cross who will wear the number 32 shirt for this season. “Arsenal just felt right as soon as I heard about the interest.
“I’m really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere at Emirates Stadium in front of a big crowd for our first game there this season. I can’t wait to get started and help us achieve something big together.”
Arsenal Women Head Coach, Jonas Eidevall added that he is “delighted” to sign “one of the best young players in world football”, whose “passing ability and explosiveness allow her to affect games in a way you rarely see from such a young player,” and can have an immediate impact.
Cooney-Cross began her career at Ballarat City before she joined Melbourne Victory where she made her senior debut in a two-year spell, before she went on to play for Western Sydney Wanderers in 2019-20 season only to return to Victory a year later.
The 21 year-old also has represented Australia at Under-17 and Under-20 levels, which led her to make her debut in June 2021 during a 3-2 friendly loss to Denmark and went on to be part of the Australia team who finished fourth at 2020 Olympics and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In the latter tournament, Cooney-Cross started in all seven of Australia’s matches and provided one assist, which came from a cross that Alanna Kennedy headed in to snatch a late consolatory goal in their shock 3-2 loss to Nigeria in their second Group B match.
Cooney-Cross could make her debut for Arsenal in a home clash against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Sunday 1 October, in a 2pm BST kick-off.
