Defender, James Milner has warned that Brighton need “a real squad effort” if want to challenge for success next season.
Milner will join Brighton on 1 July 2023 upon expiry of his contract at Liverpool – who like Brighton will be playing in UEFA Europa League next season.
The 37 year-old also brings 17 seasons worth of experience playing within various UEFA competitions, during which he helped Newcastle win 2006 Intertoto Cup plus Champions League and Super Cup for Liverpool in 2019.
Milner is therefore excited to be playing in UEFA competitions for a 18th season in his playing career.
“It’s amazing for the club to be playing in Europe,” explained Milner who described the Seagulls’ European qualification as “an attractive aspect of the move for me,” as he applauded them for their “thoroughly deserved” qualification after an impressive season.
Milner also is hopeful that his experience can help the team – especially in Europe as he added: “It’s exciting for me and playing in Europe is something I feel I can help the group with – I am fortunate enough to have played in the Champions League and Europa League many times, I want to add that value.”
The ex Manchester City defender also iterated that fans should expect strong progress this season, as he added: “The level this Brighton team play at, I think we’re going to see some good things this coming season and I can’t wait to be involved. I want to push as hard I can to help the team on and off the field.”
Milner also issued a warning for fans that Brighton will face a schedule different to previous seasons, as he explained: “It’s a lot different, you have such little time to prepare for each game, you’ve got late nights coming back from games in Europe. The logistical side of it is crazy.
“You have periods during the season where you’re not really training, you’re just recovering. You have to be ready to go and it’s a real squad effort, so everyone needs to be ready for that.”
