England Under-21s manager, Lee Carsley has announced his squad for 2023 UEFA Under-21s Euros.
Having held a pre-tournament training camp, Carsley has opted to drop four players from his final squad whilst Lille’s Angel Gomes and Manchester City’s Cole Palmer were recalled after skipping the camp.
In goal, West Bromwich Albion’s Josh Griffiths heads the goalkeeping trio with Brighton’s Carl Rushworth and Man City’s James Trafford also selected, as Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson is left out of the squad.
Djed Spence and Lewis Hall who play their club football for Tottenham and Chelsea respectively have been omitted in defence, with Carsley opting for; Max Aarons, Jarrad Branthwaite, Levi Colwill, Charlie Cresswell, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ben Johnson and Luke Thomas.
James McAtee misses out in midfield as Gomes returns to the squad, although McAtee’s City teammate – Tommy Doyle has been included alongside the Liverpool pair of Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones whilst James Garner, Jacob Ramsey and Oliver Skipp complete the midfield selection.
Up front, Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer headlines the forward selection after enjoying a positive loan spell at Middlesbrough, where he scored 11 goals in 22 appearances as Boro finished fourth and lost to Coventry in the Championship Play-Off Semi-Finals.
Man City’s treble winner, Cole Palmer has meanwhile been added to the squad and will join up with Archer plus Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke and Emile Smith Rowe.
England kick off their UEFA U21s Euros on Thursday 22 June against Czech Republic in Batumi, Georgia, before facing Israel in Kutaisi on Sunday 25 June followed by a potential Group C decider against Germany on Wednesday 28 June back in Batumi.
