Chelsea have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new Head Coach on a two-year contract.
This move marks Pochettino’s return to the Premier League since he was sacked at Tottenham in November 2019, having lost the 2018-18 UEFA Champions League Final to Liverpool just months earlier.
The 51 year-old also previously took charge of Southampton between January 2013 – May 2014, in which he led them to eighth place in the Premier League in 2013-14 season.
Pochettino will take official charge on 1 July 2023 with Chelsea only having three chances at a title next season across; Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup after they failed to qualify for Europe with a 12th placed finish this season – their worst league campaign since 1994-95 season.
The Argentinean will serve as Head Coach on an initial two-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend his contract by a further season until June 2026 depending on progress and results.
Explaining Pochettino’s appointment, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: “Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward.
“He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.”
Owners; Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, Jose E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss added that the recruitment process was “diligent and thoughtful” and are “delighted” to welcome Pochettino as “world-class coach with an outstanding track record.”
On what Chelsea supporters can expect next season, they added: “Pochettino is a coach renowned for his sides’ high-energy and eye-catching style and he has built a reputation for helping young players realise their full potential within a strong squad ethos.”
Chelsea also confirmed that Pochettino’s coaching staff will consist of; Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and Sebastiano Pochettino.
Pochettino most recently served as PSG manager between January 2021 – July 2022, during which he led the French club to 2020-21 Coupe de France, 2021-22 Ligue 1 and 2020 Trophee des Champions titles.
