Tottenham Sacks Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have parted company with Mauricio Pochettino after five and a half years.

Releasing a short statement, Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy said: “We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the Board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

“It falls to the Board to make the difficult decisions – this one more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff – but we do so in the Club’s best interests.”

Pochettino’s assistant, Jesus Perez and coaches Miguel d’Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have also departed the club.

Tottenham will provide an update on the new coaching staff ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Ham “in due course”.

This decision however won’t come as a huge surprise following a poor start to the season with just five wins in all competitions, plus an embarrassing Carabao Cup Third Round exit to League Two’s Colchester United on penalties.

Pochettino ultimately will leave behind a legacy which has seen him revitalised Spurs’ youth with graduates like Harry Kane, Harry Winks and Eric Dier now long-term first team regulars and fully fledged England Internationals.

He also guided Tottenham to the League Cup Final in his first full season at the club, falling to a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Final.

He has since managed to guide Tottenham through two seasons of upheaval as they played their home fixtures at Wembley whilst the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was built, and managed to secure fourth last season despite not spending a single penny in the transfer market whilst making the Champions League Final for the first time ever.

Levy therefore pays tribute to Pochettino for his effort during that period, saying; “Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the utmost admiration for the manner in which he dealt with the difficult times away from a home ground whilst we built the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us.

“I should like to thank him and his coaching staff for all they have contributed. They will always be welcome here.”

Ultimately, Tottenham are currently sat 14th in the Premier League and six points clear of the relegation zone, whilst suffering one of their worst ever European home defeats in a 7-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich last month.
