Callum Wilson replaces Ivan Toney in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
With Brentford striker, Ivan Toney banned for eight months due to breaches of FA Betting rules, Southgate has opted to recall Callum Wilson who has returned to form for Newcastle, having scored eight goals in the Magpies’ last seven matches.
Wilson was omitted from March’s qualifiers despite having been part of the Three Lions’ squad at 2022 FIFA World Cup.
James Maddison meanwhile has been moved from midfield to boost Southgate’s forward selection.
Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze has been called up to midfield for his first senior call-up in place of Chelsea’s Mason Mount who misses out through injury, with Eze having been in impressive form for the Eagles in recent weeks.
In defence, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Lewis Dunk and Tyrone Mings have all been recalled as Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell and Reece James miss out through injury, whilst Tottenham’s Eric Dier has been snubbed.
Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale have been retained in goal but Southgate has dropped Newcastle’s Nick Pope, who has been replaced by Sam Johnstone due to a hand injury – as the Palace goalkeeper receives his first recall since March 2022.
England will kick-off their latest UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifying double-header with a trip to Malta on Friday 16 June at 8:45pm CET (7:45pm UK Time), before hosting North Macedonia on Monday 19 June at Old Trafford, Manchester, in a 7:45pm BST kick-off.
