2022-23 Premier League: Week 37 – Manchester United vs Chelsea

Manchester United meet Chelsea at Old Trafford in a rearranged Premier League clash.

At least one point would see Man Utd secure Champions League qualification but victory would lift the Red Devils up to third place, whilst Chelsea can improve to 11th position with a draw at minimum.

Marcus Rashford could return for Man Utd after illness forced him to miss their win at Bournemouth.

Tom Heaton (ankle), Phil Jones, Donny van de Beek, Marcel Sabitzer (all knee), Lisandro Martinez (foot) and Mason Greenwood (personal) remain absent.

Chelsea could welcome Joao Felix back into contention after he missed their defeat at Manchester City with a knock.

Mateo Kovacic (knock) is a doubt but Marcus Bettinelli (unspecified), Ben Chilwell, Reece James (both hamstring), Marc Cucurella (quad), Benoit Badiashile, N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount (all groin) and Armando Broja (knee) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Man Utd host Chelsea at Old Trafford in a 8:00pm BST kick-off on Thursday 25 May, live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd are unbeaten in their last ten league meetings against Chelsea (W3, D7).
  • Chelsea are winless in their last nine league visits to Man Utd (D6, L3).
  • Each of the last five meetings between Utd and Chelsea have ended in draws (D5), with each of their last three meetings specifically finishing in a 1-1 result.
  • Man Utd have kept clean sheets in each of their last six league matches at home (W5, D1).
  • Chelsea have failed to score in all three previous visits to a Manchester-based club in all competitions this season (L3), which all came at Utd’s cross-city rivals – Man City.

Prediction

In need of just one point to secure Champions League qualification and two home games to complete their league campaign, Man Utd will be glad to be at Old Trafford roared on by their home crowd given their recent away slump.

Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils though can take heart from their clinical win at Bournemouth where they were dominant all-round, aside from some poor end product which can easily be corrected with more composure and accuracy.

Chelsea meanwhile did well to only lose by a single goal at Man City after some poor passing play from defence into midfield was clinically punished, although their defending did largely improve despite being outclassed amidst more wasteful finishing as often is the case in this team.

Frank Lampard’s Blues however should have hope of getting something here if they can play well and find their end product, especially if Utd are wasteful but I do think that the host’s defence will have enough to force a win to secure Champions League football in style.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-0 Chelsea

Result: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea
