2022-23 Premier League: Week 31 – Leeds vs Liverpool

Leeds United welcome Liverpool to Elland Road in a crucial Monday Night Football at opposite ends of Premier League table.

Victory would see Leeds climb to 15th position, whilst Liverpool will stay eighth with a win but move to within two points of seventh-placed Brighton.

Max Wober could return for Leeds after recovering from a hamstring injury which has kept him sidelined in recent weeks.

Tyler Adams (hamstring) and Stuart Dallas (thigh) remain ruled out.

Liverpool could welcome Luiz Diaz back into contention for the first time since he suffered a knee injury in October 2022.

Alisson and Ibrahima Konate are doubts after missing training with various minor issues but manager, Jurgen Klopp expects both players to be available for selection.

Naby Keita (muscle), Calvin Ramsay (knee) and Stefan Bajcetic (adductor) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Leeds United host Liverpool in a 8pm BST kick-off at Elland Road on Monday 17 April, live on Sky Sports in UK.

Stat Attack

  • Leeds have claimed four points from their last five meetings against Liverpool (W1, D1, L3).
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five league visits to Leeds (W3, D2), during which they’ve kept clean sheets in their last three wins at Elland Road.
  • Ex Red, Sadio Mane scored in each of Liverpool’s last two visits to Elland Road (W1, D1).
  • Four of Leeds’ last six goals at home have been scored before half-time.
  • Liverpool have won just one of their four Monday Night Football fixtures this season (W1, D1, L2), during their 3-1 loss at Brentford in January which was played at 5:30pm rather than 8pm.

Prediction

Following their second-half defensive implosion against Crystal Palace last weekend to lose 5-1, Leeds now must reset because their defending was their worst since a 5-2 loss to Brentford in September, with awful marking against a ferocious Palace attack.

One positive from that performance though is that their attacking movement and positioning were excellent amidst inaccurate finishing, which is something that they must build upon if want a result here although their defence has to be much better than in recent weeks.

Liverpool though don’t exactly come here on the defensive high horse after a scrappy display in their 2-2 draw against Arsenal, in which their back four rode their luck at times but they showed excellent intensity and spirit to fight back for a draw.

Quite simply, this clash really shouldn’t finish goalless given the contrastable defensive issues and attacking quality in both teams, but I just can’t see Liverpool losing this if Jurgen Klopp’s Reds want any sort of European football next season.

Prediction: Leeds 1-3 Liverpool

Result: Leeds 1-6 Liverpool
