Chelsea have appointed Frank Lampard as interim manager until end of 2022-23 season.
Frank previously managed Chelsea between July 2019 – January 2021 before he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked earlier this season by Graham Potter, only for the latter to last under seven months before he was dismissed last weekend (2 April).
Bruno Saltor took charge of Chelsea’s goalless draw against Liverpool on Tuesday (4 April) but club bosses has opted to appoint a more experienced interim manager, hence turning to Lampard until end of season just months after he was sacked by Everton in January after 12 months.
Co-controlling owners, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said that they’re “delighted” to appoint Lampard as interim manager until end of season, whilst they continue their search for a permanent manager over the coming weeks.
Explaining the decision to bring in Lampard rather than leave Saltor in charge, Boehly and Eghbali commented: “As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.
“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.”
Chelsea have an important clash away to Wolves at Molineux on Saturday 8 April, before they face Real Madrid in their UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final across two legs on 12 and 18 April respectively
Boehly and Eghbali therefore have pledged to provide Lampard with “our full backing as we aim to get the best possible outcome from all our remaining games.”
Chelsea currently sit 11th in the Premier League table and five points off achieving an European qualification spot, although a Champions League spot via top-four finish looks unlikely unless they win this season’s edition of UEFA’s premier competition.
