Chelsea have announced that Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as their new manager, following Frank Lampard’s sacking.

Tuchel has signed a 18 month contract until end of June 2022 although an extension could be greenlit if he delivers success for the club.

In a surprise move, Tuchel paid tribute to the progress made by his predecessor, Frank Lampard who was unexpectedly sacked by the club earlier in the week, saying; “We all have the greatest respect for Frank Lampard’s work and the legacy he created at Chelsea.”

The ex PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss however will be reunited with two of his former players in Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic respectively, as he looks ahead to taking charge, as he said; “At the same time, I cannot wait to meet my new team and compete in the most exciting league in football.”

Chelsea Director, Marina Granovskaia added that although the decision to change manager is ‘never easy’, the club “are very happy to secure one of Europe’s best coaches in Thomas Tuchel.”

With Chelsea sat 11 points off the Premier League summit and still challenging in the FA Cup and Champions League, Granovskaia is confident of potential success this season in at least one competition, saying; There is still much to play for and much to achieve, this season and beyond.”

Tuchel has taken charge of training with immediate effect this evening and will be in the dugout for their Premier League clash against Wolves on Wednesday 27 January at 6:00pm (GMT), as the Blues currently sit ninth in the standings with 19 matches played.

Tuchel’s arrival however comes just under a month after he was sacked by PSG despite guiding the reigning French champions to the runner-up spot in last season’s UEFA Champions League, in which they lost the Final to Bayern Munich last August.
