Everton have signed midfielder, Clare Wheeler from Fortuna Hjørring for an undisclosed fee.

Wheeler initially joined the Toffees in August on loan from Fortuna Hjørring and has made just seven appearances, yet has impressed Everton enough to secure a permanent transfer for an undisclosed transfer fee plus a two-and-a-half year contract until June 2025.

“I’m excited, delighted, just really happy to stay here,” commented Wheeler in an interview with evertontv. upon signing her permanent contract.

The 24 year-old went on to explain that she knew that earning her place “was something I had to work to achieve” despite her limited playing time.

On what it means to sign a permanent contract, Wheeler added: “I’ve really enjoyed the past six months. To have the opportunity to stay here for even longer is perfect.”

Wheeler also praised manager, Brian Sorensen for his “faith” in her after previously playing under him last season at Fortuna Hjørring in her first overseas move away from Australia.

Acknowleding Sorensen’s continued support at Everton, Wheeler said: “He brought me to Everton and continued to challenge me in a new environment which is something I’m incredibly grateful for.”

Wheeler also admitted that she has found the transition to English football and culture “really easy” as she described the WSL as “one of the best leagues in the world,” as she eyes up a place in Australia squad at this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

The midfielder also iterated that she needs “to keep looking forward and be the best player that I can be.”

Everton are currently sat sixth in WSL and ten points off UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification but Wheeler believes that the club are “building towards something.”

Wheeler added that the squad need to continue their progress if they want to fight for trophies and an European spot, as she said: “All of us know that we need to work our socks off. We need to push to see how high we can go and that’s a really good environment to be in.”

Sorensen meanwhile is “really happy” to sign Wheeler on a permanent transfer despite injury issues during the first half of this season, as he commented: “She’s been a little unlucky with injuries over the first half of the season. We believe in her. She’s a smart player and suits our style of play.”
