Williams has announced Logan Sargeant as their second driver for the 2023 F1 season.

Sargeant’s promotion comes after he finished …….th for Carlin in his rookie campaign in F2 with 2/3 race victories to ultimately secure his FIA Super Licence, having previously finished third and seventh respectively in 2020 & 21 F3 seasons for PREMA then Charouz.

The 21 year-old American has also gained three additional Super License points by completing 100km in FP1 sessions at US and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix plus FP2 at Sao Paulo GP, although he fell short of the required distance in Mexico.

Having earned a place within Williams’ Driver Academy in October 2021, Sargeant is also the first graduate to step up as a full-time race driver for the team – although Jack Aitken did race for the team at 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix as an one-off replacement after George Russell was briefly recalled to Mercedes.

Sargeant will partner Alex Albon who has been retained for next season as the American replaces Nicholas Latifi, who has now left the team.

“It’s a huge honour and a dream come true to be given this opportunity to compete in Formula 1 with Williams Racing,” commented Sargeant on his promotion to F1.

The 21 year-old also issued “a massive thank you” to everyone at Williams for entrusting him with the seat for next season, having been part of their Academy since he joined the team at 2021 US Grand Prix.

Sargeant also iterated that being part of the Academy has helped him to develop his racecraft as he explained: “Being a part of the Williams Driver Academy for the past year has given me an important platform to develop as a driver and prepare me for this next chapter.”

Williams’ Sporting Director, Sven Smeets added that giving Sargeant the opportunity to race in F1 will be “a proud moment for the team,” after the American managed to become an “integral” member of the Academy

“Seeing a driver from the Academy getting in our F1 seat is a motivation for all the other Academy drivers and demonstrates legitimacy of the programme and the platform it provides.” added Smeets on the impact of Sargeant’s promotion for other junior drivers in the Academy.

Sargeant will also become the first American to race in F1 since Alexander Rossi drove in just five races for Manor Marussia during 2015, although the Florida-born driver will be America’s first full-time driver since Scott Speed drove for Toro Rosso between 2006-07 seasons.

Confirmation of Sargeant’s seat now means that the F1 grid for next season is now complete, with Sargeant, Oscar Piastri, and Nyck De Vries all joining the line-up, whilst Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso move to Alpine and Aston Martin respectively as Nico Hulkenberg returns with Haas.
