Defender, Niamh Charles has signed a new three-year contract at Chelsea until end of 2024-25 season.

Charles has scored four goals in 58 appearances for Chelsea since she arrived from Liverpool on a free transfer in June 2020, after the 2019-20 Women’s Super League (WSL) season was curtailed early due to Coronavirus pandemic.

The 23 year-old arrived as an attacking wide player but has now transitioned into a fullback across the last two seasons, during which she helped the club to two WSL and Women’s FA Cup titles plus 2020-21 League Cup.

Speaking about her decision to extend her stay in West-London for three more seasons, Charles said: “I’m really proud to have signed a new contract with Chelsea and to continue representing the badge with pride.

“The past two years have been incredible and I’m excited to continue developing both as an individual and with the team. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in the next few years.”

Charles also acknowledged fans for their support across the last two seasons as she added: “I can’t thank the fans enough for the support they’ve shown me and the team and we’re all excited to see them again at Kingsmeadow next week.”

Chelsea Women’s General Manager, Paul Green added that the club are “delighted” to retain Charles for three further seasons.

Green proceeded to praise Charles’ development which has seen her transition from winger to full-back role underlining her versatility, as he said: “She has been developing well over the last couple of years and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve and develop over the next three years.”

Charles has also been part of the England squad for the last two seasons during which she has earned two caps, plus helped the Lionesses win 2022 Arnold Clark Cup earlier this year but was omitted from Sarina Wiegman’s title-winning UEFA Women’s Euro squad this summer.
