Chelsea Crowned WSL Champions as Liverpool Relegated

Chelsea have been crowned champions of 2019 FA Women’s Super League (WSL) with Liverpool relegated to Women’s Championship.

Confirmation of Chelsea’s third WSL title comes after a meeting of FA Board who decided to finalise the standings based on average Points-Per-Game (PPG) ratio, which meant that the Blues are champions are champions after averaging 2.6 PPG.

Emma Hayes’ Blues will therefore qualify for next season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League alongside runners-up, Manchester City.

Arsenal therefore must win this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League when the campaign resumes, if they are to qualify for next season’s competition as defending champions.

Liverpool meanwhile have been relegated after averaging just 0.43 points per game, meaning that Aston Villa will be promoted from the Women’s Championship as champions ahead of the 2020-21 season.

The FA released a statement in which they confirmed that ‘a majority decision’ was reached in regards to settling both the WSL and Women’s Championship on ‘sporting merit’ via the PPG basis.

It was also confirmed that there would be no relegation between the Championship and National League, owing to the fact that this season’s results in non-league women’s football had been expunged.

FA will now work with clubs and partners across football to begin preparations for next season, with an aim to announce the provisional start dates in coming weeks.

The remainder of this season’s Women’s FA Cup meanwhile ‘is still under review’ and the FA Women’s Board will meet later this month to discuss how best to complete the competition with an update to follow.
