Djed Spence has joined Tottenham Hotspur on a five-year contract in a £20m transfer from Middlesbrough.
Spence began his career within Fulham’s youth academy but was released in summer 2018 which led him to join Middlesbrough on a free transfer, with the right-back making his senior debut as a substitute in a First Round victory over Notts County in EFL Cup in August 2018.
The 21 year-old eventually went on to score twice in 70 senior appearances for Boro, although his breakthrough eventually came whilst on loan at Nottingham Forest last season where he scored three goals and created four assists in 46 appearances.
During his time at the City Ground, Spence won Championship Player of the Month, Young Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards in March 2022, with his Goal of the Month award coming after he delivered a long-range strike in a comeback 3-1 win at home to QPR.
Forest eventually secured promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs but opted not to move to sign Spence on a permanent transfer despite reported interest, as Tottenham looked to recruit the youngster to bolster their fullback options.
Spurs will pay an initial £12.5million transfer fee but various add-ons will see the total fee rise to £20m, with the move seeing Spence securing a return to his home city on a five-year contract until June 2027, after four years on Teesside which included a loan spell at Forest last season. .
As he took to Twitter prior to official confirmation of his transfer to Spurs, Spence snubbed any mention of Boro as he instead spoke about his time at Forest last season.
Nottingham Forest ♥️
What a massive club, what a team & what special fans. We came from the bottom & made it all the way to the top. We turned dreams into reality and I can’t thank you all enough for the special journey we all shared together🧨.
