Striker, Fabio Silva has signed a new one-year contract extension at Wolves ahead of a loan deal at Belgium’s Anderlecht for 2022-23 season.

Silva joined Wolves from Porto in September 2020 and has scored four goals in 63 appearances across all competitions in the last two seasons, although he failed to find the net in 26 appearances last season despite making three assists.

Wolves have consequently decided to send the 20 year-old Portuguese striker on a season-long loan to Anderlecht for 2022-23 campaign, after he accepted a one-year contract extension at Molineux until June 2026 with option for a further season.

Wolves’ Technical Director, Scott Sellars explained the reasoning behind Silva’s loan move as he commented: “We’ve had lots of discussions between myself and Bruno, and with Fabio as well, about what we feel is best for his development, and we felt that a season playing regularly would be very good for him at this point in his career.”

Today (19 July) is Silva’s 20th Birthday and Sellars added that for his development, Silva “… needs a season of playing regular senior football in a competitive league so he can come back to Wolves stronger.”

Sellars also pointed to Morgan Gibbs-White’s successful loan at Sheffield United last season as proof behind the decision to send Silva on loan, as he continued: “We saw with the performances of Morgan [Gibbs-White] last year how much of a positive impact a loan can have on a young player, so we believe it’s the right step in his development to follow the same path.”

“It was really important for us to sign Fabio to an extended contract before he went out on loan,” commented Sellars on the decision to extend Silva’s contract ahead of the loan move.

On how Silva responded to his loan move, Sellars concluded: “Fabio understands what we’re trying to do, and this new contract and loan shows that we’re working together to help him develop to be the best player he possibly can be.”

Silva also represents Portugal at Under-21 level, where he has scored six goals in eight appearances.
