CJ Egan-Riley has departed Manchester City for Burnley on a free transfer.
Egan-Riley has graduated through City’s Academy ranks across the last decade and made his senior debut in the Citizens’ comeback 6-1 victory at home to Wycombe Wanderers, in the Third Round of last season’s Carabao Cup.
The 19 year-old defender completed the entire match against Wycombe and did likewise on his second appearance in March, as he featured in a goalless draw at home to Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League.
Egan-Riley’s final appearance for City saw him come on as an substitute in the Citizens’ 5-0 home win over Newcastle in May en-route to the Premier League title.
Egan-Riley however has opted to decline a new contract offer in order to join Burnley on a four-year contract, where he will link up with City legend, Vincent Kompany – who is now in charge of the Clarets following his managerial appointment last month.
Speaking of his decision to move to Turf Moor, Egan-Riley said: “I’m buzzing to be here; happy the deal is over the line and I’m a Burnley player.
“I just can’t wait to get pre-season started and get the season underway.”
Kompany added that Egan-Riley had been on his and Burnley’s radar individually for a while as he praised the 19 year-old as “… a promising and talented footballer with an excellent mindset and attitude.”
The Belgian went on to add that he is “delighted” to secure Egan-Riley as he explained why he has signed the defender, as he commented: “CJ has shown a real hunger and he wants to learn and succeed at Burnley. He fits perfectly into our culture and he is a fantastic addition to our squad.”
Man City meanwhile issued the following statement concerning Egan-Riley’s exit: “Everyone at Manchester City thanks CJ for his efforts during his time at the Club and wishes him the very best of luck for the remainder of his career.”
Egan-Riley is Burnley’s third signing of this summer’s transfer window after Scott Twine and Luke McNally signed from MK Dons and Oxford United respectively.
All three new signings could make their club debuts away to Huddersfield Town in the opening match of 2022-23 Sky Bet Championship season, live on Sky Sports on Friday 29 July in a 8pm kick-off.
