Manchester City have signed goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega Moreno on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld.

Ortega Moreno began his career at Jahn Calden but soon enjoyed spells at KSV Baunatal and KSV Hessen Kassel, prior to securing a professional move to Bielefeld where he made 185 appearances in total across two separate stints between 2011-14 and 17-22.

The 29 year-old German also spent time at 1860 Munich in-between his two stints at Bielefeld where he managed 56 appearances in total for the Munich-based club.

“This is a fantastic move for me,” commented Ortega Moreno as he described City as “… an amazing team – a squad with world-class quality in every area.”

Ortega Moreno therefore felt pride at joining the reigning Premier League champions as he added: “To be given the chance to join this group of players and help continue the Club’s success is a dream for me.”

Ortega Moreno also issued the following message to Bielefeld supporters as he said: “I have enjoyed my time in Germany and I want to thank the Arminia Bielefeld fans for their support. But this new challenge of coming to City and playing in the Premier League is too good for me to ignore.

“I can’t wait to get started, meet my teammates and begin working with Pep and his backroom staff.”

Ortega Moreno has signed a three-year contract until June 2025.

City Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain added that he believes Ortega Moreno’s arrival is “a very good deal” for Man City, with the German set to compete with Scott Carson and Arijanet Muric for the no.2 role behind Ederson.

Begiristain also iterated that Ortega Moreno is a goalkeeper of “excellent pedigree” and “vast experience”, who will help the club progress forward as America’s Zack Steffen prepares to join Middlesbrough on a season-long loan deal.

On what impact is anticipated of Ortega Moreno, Begiristain said: “He has joined to compete with the other goalkeepers and help our youngsters, so it’s a transfer we are really pleased to have secured.”
