Sheffield United have signed Croatia defender, Filip Uremovic on a short-term deal until end of 2021-22 season.
Uremovic’s move to Bramall Lane comes after his contract at Russian club – Rubin Kazan was suspended until 30 June 2022, due to new FIFA regulations in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking about his decision to join Sheffield United as the Blades fight for a place in the Championship Play-Offs, Uremovic said: “This is a really big club, and it is an honour and privilege to now have an opportunity to play here. I hope we will achieve our goals this season.”
Uremovic was in the stands for Saturday’s win over Barnsley after flying in from Croatia, where he has been based since his status as a player for Rubin Kazan was suspended, with the 25 year-old describing the win as “quite a good performance and we showed we were the better team.”
Sheffield United manager, Paul Heckingbottom added that Uremovic has been on the club’s radar for a period of time, as he said: “Filip is someone our recruitment team know all about, they’ve watched him since he played for Croatia U21s, but financially he’s always been out of the club’s reach.”
Heckingbottom however iterated that this is a short-term deal as he explained that “Unfortunately, because of the terrible situation between Ukraine and Russia,” which led to suspension of player contracts, he held discussions with Uremovic about joining the Blades on a “short-term” deal.
Uremovic started his career in Croatia with HNK Cibalia between 2013-16 before joining Dinamo Zagreb where he struggled to establish himself in the first-team, which led him to join Slovenia’s NK Olimpija Ljubljana during 2017-18 season.
June 2018 saw Uremovic move to Rubin Kazan where he has scored one goal in 94 appearances in four seasons.
Uremovic could make his Blades debut away at Stoke City on Saturday 2 April before making his home bow against QPR on Tuesday 5 April.
