Newcastle United have signed Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in a £33.3m deal.
Guimaraes’ arrival at St James’ Park comes just two years after the Brazilian midfielder left Athletico Paranaense for Lyon in a reported €20m deal, with the Brazilian club set to receive £6.7m due to a 20% sell-on clause included in his transfer to Lyon.
The 24 year-old has also previously played for Audax where he had begun his career but failed to score in nine senior appearances between 2015-17 seasons.
Guimaraes has only scored three goals in 71 appearances for Lyon in all competitions, although the 24 year-old has also provided ten assists for his teammates in total across two-and-a-half seasons in France.
Newcastle will pay a £33.3m transfer fee but Lyon have attached £6.5m in add-on fees to the deal with Guimaraes moving to St James’ Park on a four-year contract until Summer 2026.
Speaking about the decision to bring Guimaraes to St James’ Park, Newcastle manager – Eddie Howe said: “Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.
“He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him. We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty.”
On the international stage, Guimaraes has made three senior appearances for Brazil and helped his team to a gold medal at 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Guimaraes will wear the number 39 shirt and could make his Newcastle debut at St James’ Park on Tuesday 8 February 2022 in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off against Everton in the Premier League, with the match broadcast live on BT Sport in the UK.
The Brazilian becomes Newcastle’s third signing of the January 2022 transfer market following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood earlier this month.
