Newcastle United have signed Chris Wood from Premier League relegation rivals, Burnley in a £25m deal.
Wood’s move to Tyneside comes after four-and-a-half years at Burnley where he has scored 53 goals in 163 appearances across all competitions with the New Zealand striker signing a two-and-a-half year contract at St James’ Park.
Speaking about his decision to sign for Newcastle, Wood said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I’m delighted to be a Newcastle United player.
“I have played at St. James’ Park a few times and it’s an amazing place, so to have the chance to represent this club with those incredible supporters behind me and my team-mates is very special.
“The club and manager have been first class during this process, and I really can’t wait to get onto the pitch and repay the faith they have in me, especially with a vital part of the season ahead of us.”
Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe added that Wood’s arrival will be important to the club’s relegation scrap following a serious injury to Callum Wilson, which has ruled the latter out until late February at earliest.
“Chris is an important signing for us at a crucial time and I’m very pleased we have been able to move quickly and bring him here.” said Howe on the importance of Wood’s arrival after the Magpies’ main striker, Callum Wilson was ruled out for two months with a calf injury.
“He is a very dangerous attacking threat, has a physicality and character that I really like, and he has vast experience in the Premier League. He will be a great fit for us.” commented Howe on what Wood brings to the squad in the relegation fight.
Newcastle have confirmed that Wood will wear the number 20 shirt for rest of this season.
Wood could make his Newcastle debut at home against fellow relegation rivals, Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday 15 January at 3pm GMT.
Should the relegation scrap go to the final day of the season, Wood could find himself facing his former team at Turf Moor in a must-win survival decider as Newcastle visit Burnley on Sunday 22 May 2022.
