Esme Morgan has signed a new three-year contract to extend her stint at Manchester City until 2025.
Morgan first graduated into Man City’s senior squad in September 2017 after progressing through their Youth Academy since joining 2014.
Morgan since has gone to score one goal in 47 senior appearances for the Citizens despite spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Everton.
Speaking to mancity.com about signing her new contract as she continues her recovery from a leg injury, Morgan said: “I’m so excited to sign a new contract. I’ve been a City fan my whole life and it’s no secret that I’ve got intentions of staying here for a long time.”
Morgan went on to iterate that this new deal “felt like the perfect one” at this stage of her career as she continues her development and strives to become a first-team regular.
Reflecting on how her leg fracture has refocused her mindset, Morgan added: “Having my injury this season and being more of a fan myself again has reignited my desire to get back playing and when that happens, it’ll probably feel like my debut all over again.
“In my mind, when I make my comeback, it’ll be starting a new journey and a new chapter in my time at this Club and I can’t wait to pull the shirt back on and play in front of our fans again.”
Manchester City Women’s Head Coach, Gareth Taylor hailed Morgan’s contract extension as “fantastic news” given how “gifted and versatile” the 21 year-old defender is, as he commented that Morgan “has her best years ahead of her which is an incredible thought.”
Taylor went on to praise Morgan’s resilience in recovering from her injury, as he said: “The dedication and hard work she has shown throughout her rehabilitation this season just sums up how fantastic she is, both on and off the pitch,” as Morgan continues her recovery.
Man City will also be shown on TV twice next month live on BBC Two as the Citizens visit Chelsea on Sunday 6 February, followed by a home clash against Manchester United on Sunday 13 February.
