2021-22 Premier League: Week Eight – Brentford vs Chelsea

Brentford welcome Chelsea to Brentford Community Centre in a blockbuster West-London derby.

If Manchester City, Manchester United, Everton and Brighton were all to lose in earlier kick-offs, Brentford would enter this match knowing that victory would see them climb to third.

Chelsea meanwhile will stay top for a second consecutive matchweek with a win.

Kristoffer Ajer is set to return for Brentford after recovering from a hamstring injury which forced him to sit out their win at West Ham, just before this month’s international break.

Vitaly Janelt (thigh) is also set to be in contention but Shandon Baptiste (shoulder) is ruled out and joins Mads Sorensen (knee) and Josh Dasilva (hip) on the injury list.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel will have Romelu Lukaku available for selection after the Belgian suffered muscle fatigue on international duty for Belgium.

N’Golo Kante is set to be also be available after recovering from Coronavirus but Reece James (ankle) and Hakim Ziyech (illness) are doubts.

Antonio Rudiger (back), Christian Pulisic (ankle) and Thiago Silva (international duty) are ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • This is the first-ever Premier League clash between Brentford and Chelsea.
  • Brentford are winless in their last six meetings against Chelsea in all competitions (D1, L5).
  • Chelsea are visiting Brentford Community Stadium for the very first time but have won just two of seven away trips against the Bees in all competitions (W2, D2, L3).
  • Thomas Frank’s Bees are yet to lose a London derby this season (W2, D1), whilst scoring twice in both wins of which they also netted first in those two matches against Arsenal and West Ham respectively.
  • Chelsea are yet to concede in a London derby this season (W3), with all eight goals coming from eight different goalscorers.

Brentford come into this match off the back of arguably one of their most impressive wins yet because they showed incredibly confident work rate on and off the ball at West Ham, especially during aerial battles because they were able to capitalise and create swift attacks when winning the ball.

Chelsea meanwhile were simply clinical in their win over Southampton despite finding themselves in a tough battle for much of the match, yet were able to ruthlessly punish the Saints once they were reduced to 10 men.

This game though will certainly pose a physical challenge for Chelsea because they must match Brentford’s work-rate throughout and maximise their chances, especially if the Bees hit their impressive quick pace on the attack which will certainly create issues for Chelsea’s defence if not precise in their defending.

As for the eventual result, this is a difficult match to predict because whilst Chelsea have the superior quality, Brentford have the work rate and attacking quality to trouble the Blues throughout so I am going for a draw here.

Prediction: Brentford 1-1 Chelsea

Result: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea
