Bromley midfielder, Ashley Charles is “feeling really strong” as he provided an update on his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.

Charles suffered a cruciate ligament injury during Bromley’s first-round defeat to Reading on penalties in the Carabao Cup after a 1-1 draw back in August, which marked their season opener after the opening round of the cup competition was moved to take place before the first weekend of the league campaign.

In an update on BFC TV, Charles explained his frustration at the timing of the injury after pre-season as he praised the club and former manager – Andy Woodman for their support, alongside forward, Victor Adeboyejo who has previous experience in that injury

“It was a blow to have done the whole pre-season and then have a freak twist of the knee like that.

“I walked off the pitch that day thinking I’d be alright. I told the gaffer I could play the next game!

“The club has been great, they got me booked into surgery and I was done in a week. The first few weeks were slow, purely bed bound, but now I’m full time in the gym, I’m feeling really strong.

“Every department has been so welcoming getting me back in, and having people like Victor who have done it before has been gold, because I can get advice from them.”

Charles however confirmed that he is still definitively ruled out of this season and focused on gym work as he prepares for next season, with his future at the club assured after he signed a new three-year contract just days before his injury.

“I’ve got nine months to full recovery, we’ve done two months so now it’s about building strength in the gym. It’s all about getting back to the pitch now, and when I’m done I’ll be back for good.”

The 27-year-old midfielder also spoke of the importance in not dwelling on his injury as he explained that positivity  is key to getting through the next nine months.

“I think I’m quite a positive person, I don’t really let things get me down. I like to stay level headed even when we had success here.

“I’ve taken that mentality into this injury. I know I can’t come back too fast otherwise I’ll do it again, so I’ve come to terms with it.”
