Manchester United have signed Hannah Blundell from Chelsea on a two-year contract with option for a further season.
Blundell has spent her youth and professional career so far at Chelsea which saw her play a part in securing six titles under Emma Hayes’ management, as well as make three international senior appearances for England.
Speaking on her decision to join the Red Devils, Blundell said: “I’m really excited to be joining this great club and I’m looking forward to being part of the journey with this team.
“I believe Manchester United can be successful and win trophies, and I will do everything I can to help bring success to the club.”
Blundell also spoke of her excitement at meeting the staff, teammates and fans as Man Utd prepare to start their 2021-22 season at home against Reading on weekend of 3-5 September, following the release of fixtures this morning (23 July).
Man Utd Football Director, John Murtough added that Blundell “is another great signing” for the team, having signed Vilde Boe Risa earlier this week.
Murtough also noted Blundell’s versatility as a full-back with belief that the 27 year-old “will add real strength” within Utd’s backline after keeping just five clean sheets in their last 11 matches across all competitions at end of last season.
Blundell’s Women’s Super League experience and title success was also noted by Murtough, commenting: “Hannah also brings experience to the squad having been involved in the WSL for several years with Chelsea, winning numerous trophies including four league titles.”
Chelsea meanwhile placed on record their thanks to Blundell for showing ‘loyalty and dedication’ throughout her time in West London and wished her well for the future.
Chelsea Women manager, Emma Hayes meanwhile paid her own tribute to Blundell, adding: “Hannah is a club legend who started with us at the very beginning as Chelsea Ladies, right through to us moving to Kingsmeadow and winning consecutive WSL titles last season.
“Hannah has played a big part of our success and we will miss her; however, this is a great opportunity for Hannah and we wish her all the best for the future.”
Blundell in United colours will come up against her former team for the first time on the weekend of 24-26 September at Leigh Sports Village, with the return leg at Kingsmeadow scheduled for the final day of season on Sunday 8 May in what could potentially be a title decider.
