Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager on a two-year contract until June 2023.
Espirito Santo makes the move to North London just one month after departing Wolves following a four-season stint at Molineux, replacing his fellow Portuguese compatriot – Jose Mourinho who was sacked by Spurs in late April.
Speaking on his decision to take up the Tottenham job, Espirito Santo said: “It’s an enormous pleasure and honour (to be here), there’s joy and I’m happy and looking forward to starting work.”
Espirito Santo also iterated that he believes that there is a depth of “quality and talent” in Spurs’ squad, despite Harry Kane looking for a move away from the club following several seasons of disappointment in terms of trophy success.
The Portuguese manager also warned his players that time isn’t “immediately” on their side with pre-season just days away, as those not in international action gear up for a return to training ahead of another tight season as they enter the new Europa Conference League in the Play-Off Round in August.
Spurs Chairman, Daniel Levy added that the priority is for the team “to revert back to our core DNA of playing attacking, entertaining football” which he believes that Espirito Santi is capable of delivering, whilst embracing the young players emerging through the Academy and build on their project.
Tottenham’s new Managing Director of Football, Fabio Paratici added that Espirito Santo’s time at Wolves in terms of implementing “an adaptive style that brings success and allows players to develop and thrive” made him the ideal candidate to guide the club forward into a new era.
Espirito Santo is set for a tricky home debut as Tottenham manager with the team set to host Manchester City on the opening weekend of the 2021-22 Premier League season on Sunday 15 August live on Sky Sports.
