Kelechi Iheanacho has signed a new three-year contract to stay with Leicester City until June 2024.
Iheanacho’s contract extension comes off the back of a massive improvement for the 24 year-old with seven goals in his last four appearances, including a brace in their 3-1 Quarter-Final win over Manchester United in 2020-21 FA Cup.
Speaking on his joy at securing his future at the club for the next three seasons, Iheanacho said; “I can’t express how I’m feeling. I’m excited, I’m happy, I’m overwhelmed! It’s a great moment and I’m happy that Leicester City gave me a new contract.”
Reflecting on his tough spells since joining the Foxes in 2017 from Manchester City, Iheanacho commented; “It’s been a great time here. It’s not been easy, but there’s a lot of people here that are good people, great people to work with.
Iheanacho also spoke of the “close” yet “family” like team spirit at the club, adding; “It’s been really great being here. It’s like a family.”
The ex Man City player meanwhile noted how important that bond is for a team, which he believes enables the club to “perform well on the pitch…” as evidenced by the Foxes’ current third-placed position in the league.
Iheanacho however is keen to commit to the club beyond this current contract extension, saying; I’m happy being here and hopefully I can stay here many more years.”
Since joining in 2017, Iheanacho has gone on to score 32 goals in 117 appearance for Leicester in all competitions, of which 17 goals came in cup competitions compared to 15 goals in the Premier League.
Recent weeks however saw the Nigerian international pick up last month’s Premier League award for March’s Player of the Month,, in which he netted his first-ever English top flight hattrick in a five goal mauling of Sheffield United.
Iheanacho is in contention to start tonight’s (3 April 2021) blockbuster clash against his former club and league leaders – Man City with kick off at 5:30pm at King Power Stadium.
