2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week 28 Roundup

Norwich City saw their lead at the Sky Bet Championship summit reduced in a dramatic weekend of action affecting both ends of the table.

Andre Ayew gave Swansea a 42nd minute lead over Daniel Farke’s Canaries on the rebound after Jake Bidwell’s shot was blocked, before Conor Hourihane made sure of victory just six minutes later as he blasted in from Jay Fulton’s lay-off to move the Swans two points behind Norwich.

Brentford however separate the pair in second as Ivan Toney’s brace helped Thomas Frank’s Bees fight back to win 4-1 at Middlesbrough after David Raya’s own goal had put the hosts ahead in the third minute.

Reading and Watford remain fourth and fifth after both picked up a point in goalless away draws at Stoke and Coventry respectively.

Phillip Billing came on as a substitute to gift sixth-placed Bournemouth victory over Birmingham City in a five goal thriller, as Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Wilshire provided a goal and assist each for the Cherries.

Down in the relegation zone, Wycombe Wanderers remain rock bottom and now 12 points adrift of safety after Glenn Murray’s brace helped Nottingham Forest to a three goal away win at Adams Park.

Sheffield Wednesday remain second-bottom despite Callum Paterson firing them ahead in the tenth minute, as Millwall fought back to win 4-1 at The Den for only their second home win of the season in all competitions.

Joe Rafferty’s first minute own goal helped Rotherham on their way to a 2-1 win at Preston to lift the Millers out of the bottom three by a single point.

Derby’s away trip to Barnsley was called off on Saturday lunchtime due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning that Birmingham consequently slip into the relegation zone on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Cardiff emerged victorious in the Severnside Derby at Bristol City as Curtis Nelson and Kieffer Moore netted within a quick seven minute spell in a 2-0 win, despite losing goalkeeper – Alex Smithies early on after he felt unwell.

QPR edged out Blackburn in a tense encounter at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium as Yoann Barbet fired in a 54th minute winner from close range.

Finally, Naby Sarr’s 74th minute rebound goal secured Huddersfield a point at Luton after Harry Cornick had given the Hatters a 11th minute lead by teeing up James Collins for a tap-in.
