Norwegian goalkeeper, Orjan Nyland has signed for Norwich City on a short-term contract until end of season.
Nyland joins the Canaries as a free agent after having departed Aston Villa in October via mutual consent, following a fall down the pecking order after Villa signed Emiliano Martinez as first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking exclusively to Norwich City FC’s official website, Nyland is excited to join the Championship leaders, saying: “I’m really pleased. Finally, the waiting time is over and I’m looking forward to really getting going with Norwich City.”
Nyland added that he had received a lot of offers but felt that Norwich was the ideal fit, as he said: “It felt like the right thing to do and I had good talks with the manager and the goalkeeping coach, as well as the sporting director so it was an easy choice really.”
The 30 year-old also investigated the club’s training facilities which he has described as ‘really good’ and is ready to crack on with his new challenge, as he looks to displace the Canaries’ first-choice goalkeeper in Tim Krul.
Norwich’s Head Coach – Daniel Farke is pleased to have signed a ‘proven’ goalkeeper in Nyland who has experience at both Championship and Premier League level, as well as at international level for Norway.
Farke also commented on Nyland’s arrival coming at a good time with the club sat at the top of the Championship, feeling that the Norwegian adds ‘some depth’ to their goalkeeping area, although Nyland is still sidelined with injury but Farke feels that he can still help the squad for rest of this season.
Norwich now boasts a strong selection of goalkeeping options as Nyland joins Daniel Barden and Michael McGovern in trying to displace Krul, who signed a new contract over Christmas to extend his stay at Carrow Road until June 2024.
