Liverpool have drawn RB Leipzig in the Last 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League as they along with Chelsea and Manchester City discovered their opposition for the first knockout round of the competition.
This is the first time that Liverpool have been drawn against RB Leipzig but the German team have already played English opposition this season, defeating Manchester United 3-2 at home last week to qualify for this stage after losing the away leg 5-0 in late October at Old Trafford.
Leipzig also knocked out the Reds’ fellow English opposition, Tottenham Hotspur at this stage last season after keeping clean sheets in both legs to win 4-0 on aggregate en route to a semi-final defeat.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have received what looks like an easy tie on paper after drawing Borussia Monchengladbach of who they’re unbeaten against in four previous Champions League meetings with three wins and a draw.
Chelsea meanwhile face a rematch against Atletico Madrid who denied them a spot in the 2013-14 Champions League Final after winning their semi-final clash 3-1 on aggregate, although they met in Group C in the 2017-18 edition where Chelsea qualified as runners-up ahead of Atletico who slipped into that season’s Europa League which they went on to win.
Defending champions, Bayern Munich have been handed a testing draw against Serie A’s Lazio, as the German team look to avoid becoming the second consecutive reigning holders to crash out at this stage after Liverpool lost to Atletico in this exact round last season.
By failing to win Group G, Barcelona will face a huge test of their ability as they draw last season’s runners-up, PSG for the first time since that controversial 6-5 aggregate win at this very stage in 2016-17 season, which saw the La Liga team lose the first leg 4-0 in Paris before prevailing 6-1 in the second leg via dodgy refereeing.
Real Madrid’s reward for scraping through as Group B winners after a dramatic final round of group matches sees them take on Atalanta, as the 13-time winners of this competition dating back to the old European Cup era looks to take a 14th crown.
Finally, Porto will meet Juventus whilst 2019-20 Europa League winners, Sevilla face Borussia Dortmund in the two other all-foreign ties.
