Dan Ticktum dominated the 2020 Italian Sprint Race to take a comfortable victory prior to disqualification whilst Callum Ilott reclaimed the championship lead in a British one-two finish.
Ticktum got a strong start to seize the lead from pole-sitter, Louis Deletraz and quickly settled into a stable pattern as he controlled the race to the flag for his second Sprint victory of the season, ahead of Ilott and Lundgaard who rounded out the podium after passing Deletraz on laps 12 and 14 respectively at Variante.
Mick Schumacher recovered from an early flat spot on his front left to pip Deletraz to fourth ahead of Shwartzman, who benefitted from technical issues for Yuki Tsunoda and Zhou to finish sixth ahead of Jehan Daruvala and Jack Aitken who took the last points paying positions in seventh and eighth respectively.
Ticktum however was disqualified post race for failing to have 0.8kg of fuel in his car to provide as a post-race sample, which meant that Ilott inherited the win ahead of Lundgaard, Schumacher, Deletraz, Shwartzman, Daruvala, Aitken and Mazepin.
In terms of the drivers’ standings, Ilott now leads Schumacher with 149 points to the German’s 143 as Shwartzman slipped to third and nine points behind Ilott as the three Ferrari junior drivers continue to battle for not just the F2 crown but also a potential F1 seat next season at Alfa Romeo and possibly Haas too.
Deletraz made a clean getaway but Ticktum narrowly made a better start to blast into the lead upon entry to Variante as Ilott fended off Tsunoda for third. Aitken meanwhile got squeezed wide by Shwartzman but managed to safely re-join the track.
Aitken then moved past Shwartzman on lap nine just as Schumacher made a move on Lundgaard for fifth into Della Roggia, which became fourth when Tsunoda slowed on the exit of Ascari with technical issues which dropped the Japanese driver out of the points, although he did re-join the race but ultimately finished six laps down on Ticktum.
Ghiotto meanwhile found himself under pressure from Aitken and the pair made contact on lap three into Variante with the former damaging his front wing to the extent that he had to pit and eventually managed to recover to 16th and last driver on lead lap, whilst Aitken found himself down to 11th as Daruvala passed Pedro Piquet for ninth.
Zhou passed Lundgaard on lap five on Variante which briefly became fourth three laps later when Schumacher locked up his front left and ran wide up the escape road at Variante to drop to sixth, although he soon regained fifth when Zhou encountered a similar issue to Tsunoda and too slid out of the points to finish eight laps down at the flag.
Up front, Ilott managed his tyres whilst slowly reeling in Deletraz and got his reward on lap 12 with DRS as he passed the Swiss driver into Variante for second, with Lundgaard producing the same move three laps later to complete the podium placings despite closing in on Ilott in the closing stages.
Further down the order, Felipe Drugovich got on the inside kerb through Variante to spin his MP Motorsport into retirement and caused a brief virtual safety car with Mazepin making a move on Juri Vips upon the restart for ninth.
Schumacher managed to snatch fourth from Deletraz with DRS into Variante despite struggling with violent vibrations in his Prema as a result of his front left flat spot, with the Charouz driver eventually fending off Shwartzman for fifth by just 0.266s at the line as Daruvala and Aitken completed the top eight.
Ticktum however pulled over on the cool down lap due to a fuel tank leakage which left him with only 0.05kg of fuel to provide as a sample which is a breach of technical regulations which require 0.8kg of fuel to be available for sample collection, resulting in his disqualification from the result despite taking victory.
