Further Race Cancellations

2017 Japan GP

2020 Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan Grands Prix have all been cancelled as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

Azerbaijan and Singapore races were cancelled due to ‘long lead times’ needed for both countries to prepare their street circuits, whilst Japan is off as a result of ‘ongoing travel restrictions’ which made a race logistically difficult.

Mercedes Run Mini Pre Season

Bottas Social Distancing

Mercedes this week ran a mini pre-season test at Silverstone behind closed doors with their 2018 car, as the team adjusts to new social distancing measures that will be in place for the foreseeable future.

Valtteri Bottas was the first driver to get back out on the racetrack in his mini pre-season test on Tuesday, which he described to Mercedes AMG F1’s Official Website as “very helpful” after spending a few months out of the motorsport environment in lockdown.

Reigning champion, Lewis Hamilton took over on Wednesday in a mixed weather session which he described as “great” and the feeling of getting back on a racetrack as ‘fresh and new’.

Hamilton also spoke of his initial concern over wondering “whether you can still drive’ after a lengthy break from racing, before eventually describing the experience as ‘a good feeling to know I can and I feel fit and ready.”

Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin however admitted that there is still a difficult issue in maintaining social distancing around the car “when the mechanics are doing the turnaround.”
