FIA have announced that they’re ‘closely monitoring the coronavirus epidemic which is affecting China, as the Chinese Grand Prix remains set to go ahead in April as planned.
The news comes amidst increasing speculation that the 2020 Formula One Chinese Grand Prix which is set to be held across weekend of 17-19 April, could be cancelled.
A short statement on FIA.com reads as follows; “Following the coronavirus epidemic that broke out in China at the beginning of the year, the FIA is closely monitoring the evolving situation with relevant authorities and its Member Clubs, under the direction of FIA Medical Commission President, Professor Gerard Saillant.
The FIA will evaluate the calendar of its forthcoming races and if necessary, take any action required to help protect the global motor sport community.”
Should the Chinese Grand Prix be cancelled then it is extremely likely that this season’s calendar will be reduced to 21 races.
The last time that a F1 race had to be cancelled was the 2011 season opener in Bahrain, due to political tensions within the country.
