2019-20 Premier League: Week 18 Roundup

Liverpool will spend Xmas at the Premier League summit with a ten point lead after a crazy weekend of action throughout the table.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were away in Qatar winning the FIFA Club World Cup in extra time over Flamengo, whilst Leicester failed to reduce their ten point deficit after losing away to Manchester City.

Jamie Vardy had put the Foxes ahead with a brilliant chipped finish to a counter-attack, only for Riyad Mahrez to soon score against his former team via a deflection from Caglar Soyuncu.

Ilkay Gundogan’s penalty then put the Citizens ahead shortly before half-time before Gabriel Jesus sealed the win midway through the second half with a tap-in from Kevin De Bruyne’s pass, which meant that City are now just a single point behind the second-placed Foxes.

Chelsea stay fourth after Willian’s first-half brace secured victory over their former manager – Jose Mourinho and Tottenham, who saw Son Heung-Min sent off for a challenge on Antonio Rudiger before alleged racist behaviour unfolded in the stands.

Down at the bottom, Watford celebrated Nigel Pearson’s first home match with a win as quick-fire second-half goals from Ismailia Sarr and Troy Deeney stunned Manchester United.

Norwich stay second-bottom after blowing a first-half lead for the second consecutive home game, as Romain Saiss and Raul Jimenez struck for Wolves to overturn Todd Cantwell’s 17th minute opener.

Jack Grealish’s late strike wasn’t enough to prevent Aston Villa slipping into the bottom three, as Danny Ing’s brace and a Jack Stephens header helped Southampton climb out of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United moved up to fifth after Oli McBurnie’s strike proved the difference against Brighton, despite the Blades’ John Egan and Jack O’ Connell seeing goals ruled out by VAR.

Miguel Almiron ended a 27 league game drought as he netted a late winner as Newcastle United edged Crystal Palace in a tense encounter, sending the Magpies ninth and into the top ten for the first time this season.

Burnley snatched a late win over an injury stricken Bournemouth to move into tenth as substitute, Jay Rodriguez headed in a 88th minute cross from Ashley Westwood.

Finally, Everton and Arsenal played out a goalless draw in their final game under caretaker management of Duncan Ferguson and Freddie Ljungberg respectively, with Carlo Ancelotti and Mikel Arteta now hired as their new permanent managers.
