Ivory Coast face Ecuador in their first Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

Ivory Coast are back in the World Cup after a 12-year absence, whilst Ecuador are making their fifth appearance at the tournament.

 

Team News

Evan Ndicka is ruled out of this match for Ivory Coast with a thigh injury.

Christopher Operi is available after he was called up to replace Clement Akpa who has withdrawn due to groin and adductor injuries.

Ecuador could be without Enner Valencia due to a minor calf injury.

• This is Ivory Coast’s first meeting against Ecuador in all competitions.
• Ecuador lost their only previous meeting against African opposition at the World Cup, which came in 2022 when they lost 2-1 to Senegal in their final group match to exit the competition.
• Ivory Coast have kept clean sheets in three of their last four matches (W4).
• Ecuador are unbeaten in their last 19 matches in all competitions (W8, D11).

 

Prediction

With up to three teams in this group capable of advancing to the knockout stages and Germany looking a near-guarantee, this clash does feel crucial as to who will get that second automatic spot because I can see both teams comfortably beating Curacao.

Ivory Coast though conceded no goals during their qualification campaign and scored 25 goals which is reflected in their recent form, so I expect them to come out fighting for the win here such is the quality within this squad with players like Evann Guessand and Amad Diallo.

Ecuador though will be motivated by their late heartbreak against Senegal four years ago which cost them a knockout spot, so I expect them to be right up for this battle given their strong form and particular ability to grind out draws when not winning.

On that note, this should be a close game but I can see this ending in a point apiece unless Ivory Coast’s firepower is too strong.
