2019-20 Premier League: Week 16 Roundup

The Premier League title fight has begun to open up after a hectic weekend of action, as Liverpool continue to move closer towards their first top flight title since 1989.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put the Reds ahead at Bournemouth with an excellent finish to Jordan Henderson’s long ball, before Mohamed Salah set up Naby Keita’s second from close range.

Keita then returned the favour early in the second-half with a through ball for Salah to slot in, completing a three goal win and Liverpool’s first clean sheet in 13 games across all competitions.

Leicester however remain eight points behind in second after battering Aston Villa 4-1 in a clinical display, as Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring before Jack Grealish blasted in a first-half injury time rebound shot.

Jonny Evans then headed in the Foxes’ third before Vardy clinically finished off Dennis Praet’s overhead ball.

Manchester City stay third although Nicolas Otamendi’s late header wasn’t enough for victory, after first-half strikes from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial sent Manchester United fifth whilst taking bragging rights in the Manchester derby.

Chelsea meanwhile cling onto fourth despite suffering a second defeat in three games, as Everton begun life after Marco Silva with a dominant 3-1 win under Duncan Ferguson.

Down at the bottom, Watford continue to prop up the table after a goalless home draw against Crystal Palace.

Alex Tettey’s opening strike wasn’t enough for Norwich to move closer to safety, after early second-half goals from Enda Stevens and George Baldock handed Sheffield United victory.

Southampton slid back into the relegation zone after Danny Ings’ opener was cancelled out by Jonjo Shelvey’s header, before Federico Fernandez’s winner secured victory for Newcastle.

Elsewhere, Tottenham produced their first clean sheet under Jose Mourinho in a five goal mauling of Burnley, as Harry Kane netted a brace whilst Son Heung-min scored a stunning solo goal from an intercepted Burnley free-kick.

Finally, Arsenal came from behind to edge West Ham 3-1 in a hard fought London derby and end an eight match winless run in all competitions.
