Swansea therefore went third despite Alex Mowatt cancelling out Andre Ayew’s opener to earn Barnsley a point at Oakwell, although the Tykes slipped to last-place after Stoke saw off Fulham to claim their first home win of the season.
QPR came from behind to see off Hull in a five goal thriller as the West Londoners climbed to fifth through a Ryan Manning strike and Ebere Eze penalty double, either side of Jarrod Bowen’s opener and a Josh Magennis consolation strike.
Preston round out the top six after losing to a Matt Miazga rebound shot as Reading took victory under their new manager in Mark Bowen.
Huddersfield meanwhile remain third-bottom after finding themselves held to a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers.
Karlan Grant gave the Terriers an early lead from the penalty spot after Elliot Bennett fouled Adama Diakhaby, only for quick-fire goals from Lewis Holtby and Bradley Dack to put Blackburn in control before Juninho Bacunastruck midway the second half to secure a share of the points.
Elsewhere, Brentford came from two goals down as substitutes, Josh Dasilva and Bryan Mbeumo pulled them level against Millwall with late goals before Mbeumo then set up a 94th minute winner from Ollie Watkins in a thrilling London derby at Griffin Park.
Charlton and Luton meanwhile took respective 3-0 home victories over Derby and Bristol City, despite the latter match seeing allegations of racist behaviour take place in the away end.
Finally, Lee Tomlin snatched Cardiff a late draw against Sheffield Wednesday, who had initially led through a 19th minute flick from Julian Borner.
