Winless Newcastle are still searching for their first Premier League win under Steve Bruce as they visit Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Should Manchester City draw at Bournemouth in the first Super Sunday match, Tottenham could go second in the table with victory whilst Newcastle could climb out of the relegation zone with all three points.
Team news
Embed from Getty ImagesTottenham will be without summer signing, Tanguy Ndombele after he picked up a minor thigh injury in training.
Son Heung-Min is however available after completing a three match suspension but Juan Foyth is absent with an ankle injury, despite having also served his three game ban.
Dele Alli could be in contention after resuming training this week following a hamstring injury, which still keeps Ryan Sessegnon sidelined.
Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce has refused to reveal whether Sean Longstaff could feature against Spurs, after making a successful appearance against Norwich following five months out with a knee injury.
Joelinton however is fit to start after recovering from a knock picked up against the Canaries, whilst Allan Saint-Maximin (thigh) is a doubt.
DeAndre Yedlin, Jack Colback (both groin), Christian Atsu (hamstring), Dwight Gayle (calf) and Florian Lejeune (knee) all remain sidelined.
Form
Tottenham enter this match unbeaten with a win and draw from their opening two matches, although they had to come from behind in both matches.
Newcastle are without a win after consecutive defeats against Arsenal and Norwich in their opening two matches.
Stat Attack
- Tottenham have won five of their last seven meetings with Newcastle (W5, L2).
- Spurs won their last two home games against the Magpies by 1-0 results, with both goals coming from Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min respectively after half-time.
- Two of Spurs’ last six goals against Newcastle have come from Dele Alli.
- Since their latest promotion from the Championship in May 2017, Newcastle have scored just once against Tottenham which came last August through Joselu at St James’ Park.
- Steve Bruce is yet to taste victory against Mauricio Pochettino as a manager after losing all five previous meetings, although two of those clashes came when Pochettino was Southampton manager.
Prediction
After two tricky opening games, Tottenham need to start showing their hand now because they can’t afford to keep coming from behind to pick up points if want to challenge for the title.
Newcastle meanwhile lack a finishing product to their chances which Spurs should look to expose if playing on the counter, and might be key if recent clashes between the pair in London are an indicator.
I however am going for a comfortable home win given the Magpies’ goal scoring difficulties against Spurs, on top of the fact that the North Londoners have scored at least twice in their two games so far.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Newcastle United
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Newcastle United
